Mission Statement

Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center of Downey Inc., dba Exchange Club Family Support Center is committed to strengthening families and preventing child abuse through parent-aide and parenting education services.

Exchange Club Family Support Center is one of more than 70 separate organizations that have been established by the National Exchange Club as part of its National Project, in conjunction with local Exchange Club service organizations in each community.  The Exchange Club Center in Downey was incorporated in 1990 and officially opened April 1, 1991.

History
Exchange Club Family Support Center began offering services to Downey and surrounding communities in April 1991.  The Exchange Club Family Support Center’s primary program is the Parent-Aide Program.  Parent-Aides are trained, supervised paraprofessionals assisting parents under stress as well as those whose children are at risk of abuse or neglect.

Parent-Aides work directly in the client’s home serving as parent advocates and positive role models.  Exchange Club Center provides Parent-Aide services to 20 Southeast Los Angeles County Cities.  Since opening the Center in April 1991, approximately 1,695 families have been referred to the Parent-Aide Program. The Exchange Club Family Support Center offers parenting education classes to the community at large.  The Center currently offers multiple curricula depending on the child’s age.  Although there is a fee to attend, no one is turned away for lack of funds.

On July 1, 1998 the Exchange Club Family Support Center opened its Satellite Office serving the City of Long Beach. After so many years of service to the community, the Long Beach Satellite Office closed its doors in October, 2017.  Although the site no longer exists, this does not affect our services to the Long Beach community.

As of the end of the year 2019, the population being served by the Exchange Club Family Support Center is 68% Hispanic, 25% Caucasian, 4% African-American and 3% other.
